Our client is a well established mine and market leader in their commodity. They have a newly created role available for an Operations Manager that will report to General Manager.
The General Manager holds the full operational management function controlling the areas of engineering and maintenance, mining and production, plant and process. The Operations Manager will be required to have involvement in all technical aspects of the operation and take direct responsibility for plants and process and engineering and maintenance, as it supports plant and process and provide input into other areas, if needed.
The candidate must be an articulate, pleasant and persuasive individual with well-developed listening skills. S/He should have outstanding emotional intelligence and be able to engage the relevant parties associated with the business internally and externally so that everyone is on track and moving in the same direction. The Operations Manager must have strong technical knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering and Maintenance – Oversee the Engineering Manager and ensure ongoing planned maintenance, operational breakdowns and project work is completed according to standards
- (Mining and Production – Manage the Mining Manager and ensure the mines resources and short and long term mine planning are well managed. Oversee the mine geology and geo-technics department) – potential responsibility, to be decided
- Plant and Process – Responsible for managing and overseeing the Plant Manager and his employees and observing all plant departments to make sure they are running smoothly, safely and efficiently meeting all quality and production targets.
- Safety Management – Responsibility for the adherence to the safety targets at the mine.
- Support the Human Resources and Transformation process.
- Support the GM with the Department of Mineral Resources, and the various stakeholders and authorities so as to ensure that there is total compliance with legislation and the Mining Charter.
- Provide a senior leadership role in all aspects of project work and business development
- Ensure safe and economically sound practices at the operation.
- Ensure compliance with company OH & S policies and procedures and relevant regulations. Actively promote safety awareness amongst company and contract personnel
- Assume responsibility for mechanics, economic analysis, equipment cost estimation, reclamation and the preparation of preliminary assessments and reports.
- Assist the departments in the development of production, capital and operating budgets and make recommendations as required.
- Participate in the continual review of company mining and planning procedures and make recommendations as required by being proactive in a team environment
- Prepare monthly and yearly reporting of various mining statistics
In respect of the ideal candidate profile:
- Must be South African citizen, preferably a Black South African
- Fluent English
- BTech, BEng or BSc in Engineering and preferably a GDE (Graduate/Post-graduate Diploma in Engineering)
- 15-20 years’ experience in plant operations
- Track record of performance managing site based operational activities
- Excellent knowledge of Mine Safety, Health & Environmental Standards
- Very good communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels, including top management, suppliers and subordinates
- Strong, charismatic person, able to manage, control and grow a dedicated team
- Strong negotiation skills and financila acumen
- Strong sense of responsibility and ownership
- Open working methods with a co-operative and consensus based approach to conducting business
- Be independent, a self-starter, a business developer, have a strong analytical background
- Be an entrepreneurial and creative demeanour, taking initiatives naturally, deal oriented
